BLACK COMMIE BITCH
a new play by Tyler Exum
a developmental reading directed by Jordan Powell
Black Commie Bitch follows Nora Conley, a New York City congresswoman who’s popular within her party but quietly disillusioned with her role in the system. Though she identifies as progressive, she finds herself appointed chairwoman of a newly re-established House of Un-American Activities Committee, deepening her internal conflict about justice, power, and what she’s actually upholding.
Out of curiosity (and perhaps seeking community outside of her Washington bubble) Nora starts secretly attending a Black communist book club in her district in Bed-Stuy. The group is made up of members who wrestle openly with theory, community, and their daily lives in the city. Their usual rhythm is disrupted when Nora unexpectedly joins the space (yikes).
As the book club members challenge her political compromises and proximity to institutional power, the room becomes a battleground of ideology and intimacy. And ultimately, Nora is forced to reckon with the very committee she once sat on.
